Local Monitoring
Eager Lab Assistants uses a dosimeter in an automobile and when not on mobile trips, an Inspector Geiger counter to monitor our lab here in SE Pennsylvania.  See regular averages below and watch or click through the slideshow for graphs and data for both instruments.

Geiger counter average at the lab: 36 cpm
(2012 - 2016: 2', sealed basement
mid-2016 to present: 3' south facing window, 2nd floor)

Beaker's Dosimeter Average: ~68 mR/yr or ~ .59mSv/yr*

*Both instruments are dose independent and measure ionizing radiation exposure.  Absorbed and equivalent radiation doses can not be directly converted as the conversion depends on the type of radiation; however, conversion for radiation of electrons, muons and photons can be estimated. For further comparative purposes, collective averages for Geiger counters of varying sensitivity across the United States is about 30 cpm; and Health Physics Society reports 0.60mSv/yr as the average dose from external background exposure in the US.
